Coaching & Supervision
Research has shown that highly skilled Wraparound Facilitators and Family Support Partners can be very important in helping families have better lives as a result of participating in the wraparound process. Supervision and coaching for these staff are crucially important supports to help them meet fidelity standards and continually improve their practice.
Training, coaching and supervision are an integrated process that introduces individuals to wraparound, has them practice the skills, and then mentors them to provide fidelity wraparound.
Experience has consistently demonstrated that people who have direct experience doing high fidelity wraparound with families are better coaches and trainers than those who do not have this experience. At the same time, individuals already in supervisory or training positions may not have the flexibility to stop other work for several months to complete this requirement.
In some wraparound efforts, a supervisor has the time and responsibility to do both functions. In other programs, coaches may be other positions who partner with the supervisor and facilitator to provide the coaching function. This might be in the form of an individual who is dedicated wholly to coaching or an advanced facilitator who provides coaching part time in addition to providing some direct wraparound facilitation.
Part of the VVDB support of local wraparound coaches involves their attending a special 3-day training, which introduces the coaches to the basic skills of coaching. Then, VVDB expert trainer/coaches do on and off-site mentorship, guiding the local coaches through a series of skill demonstrations. As coaches are certified, they develop a locally sustained, ongoing process for training and certifying their own staff. Then, the only long term costs are for the training textbooks and workbooks and optional follow-up consultation from VVDB trainer coaches.
VVDB has and recommends use of standardized expectations for fidelity, to ensure consistency of high fidelity wraparound. However, VVDB also believes strongly in taking a strengths-based, culturally competent approach to the unique aspects of a community. All VVDB expert coaches are skilled at doing initial assessment of wraparound fidelity status (or wraparound-like individualization and other skills) through doing an initial day of interviews with agency leadership, staff, and consumers. We use this interview data to write a brief plan for moving forward with coaching, and to educate key local staff about the process of coaching high fidelity wraparound.
