Background

Dr. Jim Rast is the founder and architect of MiiWrap. The system emerged from more than 35 years of direct practice, system leadership, and evaluation work across child welfare, mental health, healthcare, and community-based human services. Jim began facilitating wraparound with children and families long before it was widely implemented, personally providing wraparound to families in rural southeast Kansas and then building local capacity by training, coaching, and supervising teams to serve hundreds of families at a time across multiple counties. His work helped introduce and sustain wraparound practice in southwest Kansas, ultimately serving thousands of children and families within a fully integrated system of care.

MiiWrap was created in response to a persistent problem Jim encountered across decades of system design and consultation: wraparound works, but only when systems actively support practitioners to implement it with skill, consistency, and fidelity. As a principal investigator on a five-year federally funded system of care project and later as a national consultant working in 34 states and 15 tribal governments, Jim repeatedly saw the gap between wraparound principles and day-to-day practice. MiiWrap was designed to close that gap: translating wraparound values into observable skills, supervision structures, coaching processes, and quality improvement mechanisms that can scale without losing what makes wraparound effective.

Coaching Philosophy

Jim’s coaching philosophy is the backbone of MiiWrap. He believes that sustainable practice change does not come from one-time training, compliance-driven oversight, or surface-level technical assistance. It comes from creating learning environments where practitioners are expected to think critically, reflect honestly, and take responsibility for how their practice impacts families. His coaching is relational, direct, and deeply respectful of the complexity of the work. Jim challenges practitioners and leaders to move beyond good intentions and focus on whether their actions are truly aligned with individualized, family-driven, strengths-based practice.

At the same time, Jim is clear that systems (not just individuals) must change for practice to improve. His coaching helps supervisors, managers, and leadership teams see how policy decisions, caseload structures, documentation requirements, and funding mechanisms either support or undermine wraparound fidelity. MiiWrap coaching is designed to build durable competence: practitioners who can adapt thoughtfully, supervisors who know how to coach rather than correct, and organizations that can sustain high-quality wraparound over time.
